Mold Questions, Answered in Plain English
What people ask us
Can I clean mold myself?
Sometimes. A small patch on a hard surface, like a tile or a painted wall, is a fair DIY job. Wear gloves, a snug mask, and eye protection. Stop if the patch is bigger than a few feet, keeps coming back, or sits on drywall or wood. Those jobs often need a local provider. Mold also grows where you cannot see it.
Does bleach kill mold?
Bleach can lighten the stain on hard, smooth surfaces. It does not work well on porous things like drywall, wood, or carpet. The mold roots stay behind. Bleach also gives off harsh fumes. Never mix it with other cleaners. A provider can explain safer ways to clean the surface and, more important, fix the damp that feeds the mold.
How do I find a mold inspection near me?
Start by asking for providers in your area who inspect homes. You can request a callback to check provider availability, or send the request form. Then ask each provider a few questions about their process, their written report, and their quote. Compare two or three answers before you choose. Ask before you sign.
What should I ask a provider before I hire them?
Ask what they will check and how they will test. Ask if the quote is in writing and what it covers. Ask how they keep mold from spreading while they work. Ask how they will dry the space. A good answer is clear and specific. Be careful if a provider rushes you, avoids details, or wants payment before explaining the plan.
Is certified mold testing really needed?
Not always. If you can see mold and smell it, testing may add little. Testing helps when you smell mustiness but see nothing, or when you want to know what is in the air. Ask a provider what training they have and how they will use the results. Make sure the report says what the numbers mean, in plain words.
How long does mold removal take?
It depends on the size of the job and how wet the space is. A small area may take a day or two. A larger job in a basement or crawl space can take longer. Drying often takes more time than cleaning. Dry first, clean second. A provider can give you a rough timeline in the written quote.
Is black mold dangerous?
Any heavy mold growth can bother your breathing, eyes, or skin, and color alone does not tell you how risky it is. Some people react more than others, like kids, older adults, and people with asthma. Keep the area closed off, avoid stirring it up, and talk with a provider. If you feel ill, talk to a doctor.
Will the mold come back after the work is done?
It can, if the damp stays. Fix it, then keep it. Fix leaks, keep your sump pump working, and run a dehumidifier in the basement during humid summers. Clean gutters so water flows away from the house. Keep indoor humidity under about 50 percent. Ask the provider what caused the problem and how to stop it.
